Indian Lake is a scenic 12-mile-long reservoir located in the hamlet by the same name. Known as the “Whitewater Rafting Capital of New York State,” Indian Lake is part of Hamilton County and serves as a popular hub for paddling, fishing, island camping and hiking in the Adirondack Park.
History of Indian Lake
In 1898, a massive stone and timber dam was built on Indian Lake to regulate flow into the Indian River and subsequently the Hudson River, aiding downstream industrial needs. As a result, the water level was raised approximately 33 feet, turning the lake into a powerful water storage reservoir. Today, the water level is managed by the Hudson River-Black River Regulating District, which drops the water levels approximately 10 feet each fall for spring flood control.
Indian Lake Facts
The lake covers 4,255 acres with 50 miles of shoreline. It is 14 miles long and 1.5 miles across at its widest point with a maximum depth of 80 feet and an average depth of almost 40 feet. There is a hard surface boat launch ramp with parking for 50 cars and trailers located at the Indian Lake Islands Campground off State Route 30, about 12 miles south of the hamlet of Indian Lake.

- Winter Sports – Enjoy snowmobiling on groomed local trails, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing, as well as ice fishing on the lake.
