With warm and pleasant temperatures and more than 15 hours of daylight at its peak, summer is when the Adirondacks really shine. Although the region can experience heatwaves, occasional humidity, and sudden rainstorms this time of year, June through August is generally ideal for outdoor recreation, drawing more visitors to the Adirondacks than all the other seasons combined.
Summer Temperatures
Temperatures generally range from the 70s°F to low 80s°F during the day across June, July and August. However, mornings, nights and high summit elevations tend to be 10-15°F cooler.
- June – Mild days are bookended with chillier mornings and nights, with average highs in the mid-70s°F and lows in the 50s°F.
- July – Typically the hottest and most humid month, with temperatures occasionally reaching 80°F during the day and lows dropping into the mid-50s°F in the mornings and evenings.
- August – Daytime highs generally range from the mid-to-high 70s°F, while nights remain cool, typically in the mid-50s°F.
Summer Precipitation
Sudden rainstorms are typical in the Adirondacks, but often short-lived, with average rainfall staying consistently around 3.1-3.4 inches per month across June, July and August.
- June – Generally considered the wettest month, due to lingering spring conditions and rain showers, with a 46% chance of precipitation on an average day.
- July – Often brings a higher total rainfall volume than June, due to heavy, afternoon thunderstorms, though with fewer total rainy days than June.
- August – Typically one of the drier summer months with a mix of sunny days and occasional passing summer showers.
Summer Conditions
Summer conditions in the Adirondacks are ideal for outdoor recreation, including hiking, biking, paddling, swimming, and fishing, but it’s important to check conditions before heading out.
- June – Through mid-month, trails are still generally muddy and wet from melting snow, particularly on high-elevation trails, so hikers are advised to wear waterproof boots.
- July – Warm, pleasant days and cool nights make July ideal for outdoor activities, but be prepared for the possibility of a quick afternoon thunderstorm.
- August – Early August is often warm and suitable for swimming, as water temperatures are at their warmest. However, late August can feel a bit more fall-like.
