Known for hosting the Winter Olympic Games in 1932 and again in 1980, Lake Placid is a quaint mountain town nestled within the High Peaks of the Adirondack Mountains that’s a year-round favorite for winter sports enthusiasts and visitors alike.
Local History
Although Lake Placid was first settled in the early 19th century, its fame came later after it hosted both the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. Magical moments can be found all throughout this rich history—including when Team USA beat Russia during its Miracle on Ice victory!
These days, Lake Placid is a thriving tourist destination. Not only do visitors come to see the Olympic venues and museums, but they also enjoy its natural beauty and year-round activities.
Lake Placid Village
When you think of the village of Lake Placid, it’s easy to picture yourself in a quaint little town on an amazing lake. But what many people don’t realize is that the small body of water most of us know and love is actually called Mirror Lake!
At approximately 120 acres, Mirror Lake is a much smaller body of water than Lake Placid. It has no motor boats and can be enjoyed from private or town beaches; the lake is most often used for canoeing, swimming—and ice-skating in winter months!
An amazing destination anytime of year. With scenic hiking, amazing skiing, breathtaking foliage, and access to resorts, restaurants, shopping, and more – the village of Lake Placid shines all year long!
