Location

Paul Smiths is a tiny hamlet in Franklin County, NY in the census-designated town of Brighton. Located on Lower St. Regis Lake in the northeast corner of the Adirondack Park, Paul Smiths is 2 hours south of Montreal, 30 minutes from Lake Placid and Malone, NY and just 15 minutes from Saranac Lake. Nearby mountains include St. Regis Mountain and Jenkins Mountain.

History

Paul Smiths got its name from Paul Smith’s Hotel, which was founded here in 1859 by Apollos (Paul) Smith. Formerly known as the Saint Regis House, the hotel was one of the first wilderness resorts in the Adirondacks. After the hotel burned down in 1930, Paul Smith’s College was built on the site, funded by the estate of Paul’s son Phelps Smith. The hamlet is home to the historic Northbrook Lodge, an Adirondack great camp listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, as well as White Pine Camp, the summer Whitehouse of President Calvin Coolidge.

Paul Smith’s College

Paul Smith’s College is the only four-year college in the Adirondack Park, offering master’s, bachelor’s and associate’s degrees in natural resource conservation, environmental sciences, hospitality, culinary arts and more than 20 other degree programs. The College features panel discussions, cultural performances, concerts and a training restaurant for students in the culinary arts and restaurant management programs, where guests can dine on the patio and enjoy breathtaking views of Lower St. Regis Lake.

The mountains, lakes and forest surrounding Paul Smiths hamlet provide boundless opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, fishing, bird watching, hiking and biking, as well as skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. In addition, the Paul Smith’s College Visitor Interpretive Center features 3,000 acres and 25 miles of trails traversing nearly every type of habitat found in the Adirondack Park, including ponds, marshes, brooks, swamps, bogs, fens and various forests.
