Schroon Lake – Small Town Character with a Big Upside

Just 30 minutes northwest of Lake George, the Hamlet of Schroon Lake is one of the most popular locations in the Adirondacks.  That’s because it offers residents a perfect combination of mountain solitude with easy access to local events, restaurants, and outdoor activities.

Schroon Lake Geography

When the French first settled Schroon Lake in the early 1800’s, the region was a corridor for trade in the North Country. These days, it’s more about convenient travel and the nearby Northway (I-87) makes accessible other parts of the Adirondacks and points south such as Saratoga or Albany. Head northbound for destinations including Montreal or take a quick trip to nearby Paradox Lake.

Recreation Opportunities Abound

The Village of Schroon Lake is home to arguably the best beach in the Adirondacks and it’s only a short walk from downtown. Water activities on the lake include boating, kayaking, sailing, and more. Fishermen enjoy angling for largemouth and smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, northern pike, and yellow perch. Ice-fishing is popular in the winter months.

Away from the Lake there’s a good selection of hiking trails, Schroon Lake Golf Course is a 9-hole, 36 par course that transforms to Schroon Lake Ski Center for skiing, sledding, and tubing in winter. Runners will love the Adirondack Marathon held in downtown Schroon Lake each September.

Arts & Activities on the Lake

Schroon Lake is home to a thriving arts community including the Seagle Festival, which is the oldest summer vocal training program in the country. Visitors and locals enjoy performances of all kinds at the Boathouse Theater and Schroon Lake Bandstand. The Adirondack Hub region has a full, year-round events calendar with craft fairs, a regatta, and the Harvest Celebration at Gore Mountain. After enjoying local events, people stroll through the village to browse at the shops and dine at one of Schroon Lake’s many restaurants.
