Our Adirondack MT Land, our team may argue about where the best fishing spot for trout is, what hiking trail is the hardest, or which small town diner serves up the tastiest breakfast, but one thing we all agree on is that Cranberry Lake is one the of the Adirondack’s hidden gems. Only about 25 miles west of Tupper Lake as the crow flies, this gorgeous area has everything that people move to the mountains to enjoy.
Cranberry Lake Geography
The lake was named for the bogs it once contained. In 1865, New York State built a dam on the east branch of the Oswegatchie River that doubled the lake’s surface area but killed thousands of trees. You can still see the stumps in some of the shallower parts of the lake.
Most of Cranberry Lake is in the eastern part of the Town of Clifton, but a small part of this end of the lake is in the Town of Piercefield, with just a sliver on the west side in the Town of Fine. The body of water itself is in the southern part of Saint Lawrence County with the community of Cranberry Lake located on the Northern shore.
Watersports, Hiking, and Snow Fun
Cranberry Lake is the third largest lake in the Adirondacks covering almost 7,000 acres so watersports and fishing are popular. Residents and visitor enjoy boating, rafting, kayaking, canoeing and more. The lake is stocked by NYSDEC with trout and nearby rivers, especially the Raquette River, offer excellent fishing.
Even by Adirondack standards the hiking around Cranberry Lake is outstanding for everyone from beginning to intermediate hikers. You’ll enjoy trails such as Dog Pond Loop, Otterbrook, and Cat Mountain in the Cranberry Lake Wild Forest, Western Parcel, Northwestern Parcel, Eastern Parcel, and Five Ponds Wilderness Area. You can even try hiking the 50-mile loop of trails to complete the Cranberry Lake 50 challenge. When the snow flies, many of these great hiking trails are converted into groomed snowmobile, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing trails.
