In the foothills of the northern Adirondacks, known as the Adirondack Frontier, Chateaugay offers natural wonders and a bit of history around every turn. History
Chateaugay is part of the Old Military Tract, a section of land set aside for veterans of the Revolutionary War in 1786, but none of the soldiers chose to settle here. The town was eventually settled in 1796, and ultimately played a significant role in the War of 1812. Troops were quartered here, a skirmish was fought just north of the present village, and American troops that fought in the Battle of the Chateauguay were staged in the area.
Natural Wonders
Chateaugay is known for its extraordinary natural structures, including the Chateaugay River, the Chateaugay Lakes and the Chateaugay Chasm & High Falls. The latter is a sight behold. Cut into narrow cavern walls that stretch upward into the surrounding forest, this incredible 120-foot waterfall is the main attraction in High Falls Park and Campground.
Outdoor Recreation
The Chateaugay River, a tributary of the Saint Lawrence River, flows northward through the town, and is dammed along the way to form the Upper and Lower Chateaugay Lakes. The River and Upper Lake are ideal for paddling and fishing, while the Lower Lake is better for boating and water sports, such as waterskiing, wake boarding, and tubing. You’ll also find eight miles of marked trails for hiking in the Chateaugay State Forest, as well as ice fishing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling during the winter months.
Attractions
Located on Main Street, the Chateaugay Community Bowling Center and historic Town Hall Theater offer year-round entertainment, movies and concerts for all ages. The Chateaugay Fish Hatchery is another unique attraction in the area. The northernmost fish hatchery in New York State is open to the public and raises and stocks more than 96,000 pounds of fish for Adirondack waterways each year.
