Frequently Asked Questions about Hunting in the Adirondacks

If you’re new to hunting in the Adirondacks, you may have a lot of questions. We’ve compiled a list of some of the most frequently asked questions we hear from newcomers to the sport.

When am I allowed to hunt?

Hunting seasons vary depending on game type and region of New York State. For more information regarding hunting seasons and bag limits, visit our 2023-24 Adirondack Hunting Season Guide.

What can I use to hunt?

In New York State and the Adirondacks you can use any of the following to hunt big game: Bow, Crossbow, Muzzleloader, Handgun, Shotgun, or Rifle.

Are there age limits on hunting?

Yes. In New York State, hunting is limited to those ages 12 and up. Those between the ages of 12-15 are considered junior hunters and must retain special permits.

Do I need a hunting license?

Yes. All hunters in NYS must have a hunting license to hunt any wild game. A hunter may also need multiple licenses, permits, or stamps depending on the type of game being hunted, the age of the hunter, and whether the hunter is using a firearm or a bow.

Where do I get my hunting license?

Hunting licenses can be purchased at a licensed issuing agent location or can be purchased online or by phone. Visit the DEC website to purchase your license or find a location.

Can I hunt on public land?

New York State offers plenty of public lands for hunting, trapping, fishing, and many other recreational activities. When hunting, be sure to follow all state and local regulations. For more information, visit the New York State DEC website.

Can I hunt on private land?

Yes. Since the majority of land in New York State is privately owned, most hunting takes place on private property. Sportsmen who own their own Adirondack hunting land can freely take game animals hunted on their own private property.

If you do not own the private land on which you are hunting, you must have permission from the landowner to be there. The rights and property of landowners should be respected at all times.

What makes a good hunting property?

There are several factors to consider when purchasing a piece of hunting land in the Adirondacks, including parcel size, land isolation, types of habitats on property, the type of game you want to hunt, and more.
