Adirondack Coast Region Information

The Adirondack Coast holds an important place in American military history. During the War of 1812, the Battle of Plattsburgh was fought here, and ultimately ended the final British invasion of the northern United States. Each year, military re-enactments and encampments are held to showcase the area’s rich history.

The Adirondack Coast also hosts a handful of annual fishing tournaments, and offers 100 miles of fresh water for boating and kayaking, as well as prime conditions for sailing, windsurfing and other water sports. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of Champ, Lake Champlain’s legendary Lock Ness monster.

A popular destination for road biking, the Adirondack Coast features several New York State Scenic Byways and the Lakes to Locks Passage. Scenic back roads traverse parks, a growing wine trail and small towns and historic sites, ideal for biking. In winter, enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at Point au Roche State Park, ice fish on Lake Champlain, or sail over the ice with a kitewing or snowkite.

Ausable Chasm is one of the region’s top family attractions all year ling. Carved into the landscape over 10 million years ago, the “Grand Canyon of the East” is an impressive two-mile gorge, offering self-guided hiking, raft tours, cave and waterfall hikes, mountain biking, disc golf, tubing and so much more.
