Much like the hibernating wildlife, many Adirondack land owners are returning to their properties for their first time in months to them ready for summer. If this is your first spring opening, or you’re an old pro who could use a refresher, here’s a quick checklist of things to do this spring to prepare your Adirondack property for summer.
Spring Opening Check List for Adirondack Properties
Preparing your Adirondack property for summer involves de-winterizing and indoor cleaning, as well as exterior maintenance and clean-up.
Exterior Property Maintenance
o Survey Damage – Walk the property to look for plow damage, tree damage, animal burrows, or frost heaves.
o Clear Debris – Clean up branches, leaves and debris. Once, the soil has dried out, clear any trails on the property, and, if you have gardens, begin weeding and turning the soil.
o Inspect Docks & Decks – Look for wood rot and loose nails, and plan to power wash or stain docks and decks, if needed.
o Clean Furniture & Grills – Set up patio furniture, check grills for propane leaks, and ensure your fire pit is cleaned and ready for use.
Interior De-Winterization & Cleaning
o Do a Walkthrough – Check for signs of animal activity, pests or leaks. Inspect fireplaces, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and change HVAC filters, if applicable.
o Turn on the Water – Restore water to the plumbing system, inspect pipes for leaks or signs of damage, and flush antifreeze out of toilets, traps, and drains. Check your septic system and ensure the well is running properly.
o Reconnect Appliances – Reactivate your utilities, plug in appliances and electronics, and ensure your water heater, HVAC and electricity are working.
o Air Out & Clean – Open windows to freshen up stale air and give the rooms a deep clean to remove dirt and dust accumulated over the winter.
