Winter in the Adirondacks can be intense, with heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures. Preparing your property for winter and maintaining it throughout the season involves several important tasks. At Adirondack Mountain Land, we understand the unique challenges that property owners face this time of year because we live here, too. To help you maintain your Adirondack property during the frosty months, we’ve put together this easy-to-follow winter maintenance checklist.
Adirondack Land Winter Maintenance Checklist
Tree care and brush clearing, driveway maintenance, snow removal and home winterization should all be part of your seasonal preparedness plan.
Tree Care & Brush Clearing
Remove deadfall, weak branches, and overgrown brush that could become dangerous projectiles during heavy snow or ice storms. Ensure brush isn’t too close to your house, propane tanks, or septic systems, and make sure low-hanging branches or encroaching brush don’t block paths or pose risks for snow removal equipment.
Driveway Maintenance
Keep your driveway and walkways clear of snow and ice to ensure safe access to your home. Have shovels, a snow blower or a plow on hand, and plenty of ice melt at the ready, and consider hiring a snow removal service for consistent maintenance. A reliable 4×4 or AWD vehicle with snow tires is also a must, especially if your land is located on a road that is not maintained.
Roof & Deck Snow Removal
Use a roof rake to regularly clear snow from your roof to prevent overloading and potential collapse. Remove snow from decks and patios to avoid structural damage caused by the weight of the snow.
Gutter Checks & Ice Dam Prevention
Clear your gutters and downspouts of ice and debris to ensure proper drainage and prevent water damage. Make sure your attic is well insulated and ventilated to minimize the risk of ice dams forming at the edge of your roof, which can lead to water back up and damage your home.
Heating & Plumbing Maintenance
Have your heating system serviced to ensure that it’s operating efficiently and safely. Replace filters and check for any necessary repairs. Schedule a chimney inspection to remove dangerous buildup and detect hidden issues. Prevent frozen pipes by checking your pipes’ insulation, especially those in unheated areas, and consider adding insulation or heat tape to vulnerable pipes.
Emergency Preparedness
Keep an emergency kit stocked with candles, batteries, lanterns or headlamps, and blankets, as well as an emergency food and water supply. Make sure your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are working properly, especially if you use a generator, wood stove or other fuel-burning appliances.
