Both Quebec and Ontario have their fair share of prime fishing spots, including the St. Lawrence River and Lake St. Pierre, but for truly legendary fishing near Montreal, experienced anglers recommend crossing the U.S. border into New York’s Adirondack Park.
The Adirondack’s crystal-clear lakes and ponds, fast streams and rivers, rocky shorelines and fish-favorite hiding spots make for a sport fishing paradise. In addition, many of the waterways in the area are stocked regularly with brown and brook trout.
Adirondack Fishing Spots near Montreal
The Adirondack Park is a 6-million-acre expanse, but you don’t have to travel far to find world-class fishing. Just over the border from Montreal, in Franklin County, there are numerous rivers, lakes and ponds known for trophy catches.
Salmon River
Six designated fishing areas can be found along the Salmon River, which flows through the town of Malone NY. The Chasm Falls area has plenty of deep pools and pocket water, while the Whippleville section is ideal for wading. The river is stocked annually with both brown trout and rainbow trout, and catch and release fishing is permitted all year with artificial lures.
Chateaugay & Marble Rivers
The Chateaugay and Marble Rivers can be accessed from the towns of Chateaugay and Brainardsville, and are both stocked with brown trout, rainbow trout and brook trout, in addition to wild browns and brookies. There are four sections of public fishing access along the riverbanks, including one section of the Marble River near the Canadian border.
Osgood Pond & Osgood River
Located in the town of Brighton, Osgood Pond offers 500 acres of hungry northern pike and largemouth bass. Explore the weeds with a small boat and trolling motor for some productive bass fishing or head to the Osgood River for brook trout. Bullheads and panfish are also prevalent here, and the pond is heralded for its lively ice fishing.
Meacham Lake
This 1,185-acre lake offers several good fishing spots. The weedy, southern end is known for “big bruiser” pike, while the eastern side is a prime location for smallmouth bass. Other species include lake whitefish, brown bullhead, rainbow smelt, fallfish, pumpkinseed and yellow perch, as well as an annual stock of splake and brown trout.
Other prime fishing spots in the region include Deer River, Clear Pond, the Saint Regis Lake and Saint Regis River, Rainbow Lake, Jones Pond and Long Pond.
