What types of recreational devices are allowed on the slopes?
Only skis and snowboards with metal edges and retention devices are allowed on Whiteface Mountain ski trails. Sleds, inner tubes, snowmobiles, snow skates, and snow bikes are not allowed on ski trails during operational and non-operational hours.
What are the best summer activities on the mountain?
There’s plenty to do at Whiteface during the summer. Ride the Cloudsplitter Gondola from the base to the peak and take in some spectacular Adirondack views. Enjoy disc golf at the bottom sections of some favorite Whiteface ski trails. Hikers can trek over a variety of trails of every level and explore the region’s landmarks and wildlife.
What are Whiteface’s elevation numbers?
The peak elevation is at 4,867 feet and the mountain vertical, or how “tall” a mountain is in terms of the elevation change you can ski or descend from top to bottom, comes in at 3.430 feet. This is the greatest vertical in the east!

Whiteface base: 1,220 feet.
Little Whiteface: 3,676 feet.
Lookout Mountain: 4,000 feet.
Highest lift terminus: 4,386 feet.
Highest Skiable Terrain: “The Slides” at 4,650 feet.
How much of Whiteface is skiable?
There are 94 trails, and the total distance of skiing and riding is over 24 miles. The longest run is the Wilmington Trail at 2.1 miles and there are 299 skiable acres, not including 35 acres of out-of-bounds area, off-piste double-black diamond wilderness terrain skiing on The Slides (conditions permitting).
What’s the restaurant scene like in the Whiteface/Lake Placid area?
This region of the Adirondacks has many great places to eat the feature locally sourced food from family-run farms. You’ll find everything from Adirondack barbeque to quick sandwich places, farm-to-table restaurants, and gourmet bistros. All these options also come with a great mountain view!
How many lifts are on the mountain?
There is one eight-passenger gondola (the Cloudsplitter, which also operates in the summer), 2 high-speed detachable quad lifts, 3 fixed quad lifts, 1 triple, 3 doubles, and 2 conveyor lifts.
Is there a good mix of ski terrain by ability?
Whiteface has 87 ski trails with a variety of green circle, blue square, and black diamond runs. The overall breakdown by difficulty is 30 percent expert, 46 percent intermediate, and 24 percent beginner slopes, so there’s great skiing and snowboarding for every level.
What Adirondack communities are in the Whiteface region?
The Whiteface region is made up of the town of Wilmington and hamlets of Jay, Upper Jay, and Ausable Forks. It’s close to Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, and just a short drive from Lake George. There are plenty of quaint small towns throughout Essex County and nearby Franklin County.
How long does it take to drive to Whiteface?
Whiteface is closer than you think. It’s only about five hours drive from New York City and Boston; less than four hours from Ottawa, Canada, and Syracuse, NY; and two to three hours from Albany, NY, Burlington, VT, and Montreal, Canada.
