While much of the Adirondack Park’s 6 million acres is wild and remote, the region is also dotted with more than 100 communities. A handful of these small towns and villages are considered population centers, serving as central hubs for services, healthcare and tourism.
For many people, proximity to (or distance from) these regional hubs is an important consideration when looking at land for sale in the Adirondacks. Getting to know each population center, and the services it offers, can have a big impact on where you want to live.
Primary Population Centers in the Adirondacks
Each of these Adirondack communities boasts its own character and charm, as well as history, culture and fun, but the one thing they all have in common is access to abundance of outdoor recreation.
Saranac Lake – The largest village by population within the Adirondack Park, Saranac Lake hosts the annual Winter Carnival and offers a charming downtown with art galleries, local shops, and cafes.
Lake Placid – As a two-time Winter Olympic host, Lake Placid features several active winter sports venues, and a walkable Main Street with dining and shopping, as well as the annual Ironman Competition.
Lake George – Located at the southern end of the Adirondack Park, Lake George is packed with family-friendly attractions, shops, restaurants, beaches and more, making it a bustling hub for tourism.
Glens Falls/Queensbury – Although not technically located within the Adirondack Park, Glens Falls and Queensbury are known as the “Gateway to the Adirondacks” and serve as a major hub of suburban services just south of the park.
Ticonderoga – Serving the east side of the Adirondack Park, Ticonderoga is strategically located between Lake George and Lake Champlain, and is currently undergoing a major downtown revitalization project.
Plattsburgh – Just north of the Adirondack park boundary, Plattsburgh serves as the primary commercial, industrial and transportation hub for the northern Adirondacks and the Lake Champlain region.
Old Forge – The primary commercial, residential and tourism hub of the Central Adirondacks, Old Forge is home to McCauley Mountain Ski center and offers shopping, dining and lodging, along its bustling main street.
